The research programme presented on this website aims to collect data from written sources of the middle and late Byzantine periods on the so-called ‘blessings’, that is to say the portable objects used as souvenirs of pilgrimages to Christian shrines and holy places. It will also attempt to locate, record and collect the corresponding material remains from the same period.
On the web pages below you will find a description of the programme, a brief survey of the history of research into Byzantine pilgrimage and a database with the relevant secondary literature. There is also a pilot project on thedatabase of documentary sources.
Vicky Foskolou, Lecturer in Byzantine Archaeology in the Department of History and Archaeology at the University of Crete is the Academic Director of the programme, which is funded by the Research Committee of the University of Crete.
